Older people

Lodge Almoners are encouraged to stay in contact with older members and widows, and often become a first port of call when assistance is needed. Older people can face a variety of problems, from choosing a care home to managing their mobility needs at home.

Care homes

The RMBI operates 17 care homes throughout England and Wales, which provide the following types of care:

  • Residential care - for people who find it difficult to care for themselves at home but are still looking to maintain some independence
  • Nursing care - for people who may have complex care needs, and need a nurse on hand around the clock
  • Dementia care - for people living with dementia.

These services are available to people with either private or public funding. In certain cases, financial subsidies may be available from the RMBI. Contact Freemasonry Cares for further information and to discuss a case at greater length.

Respite Care

Respite care provides regular carers with the opportunity to take a break from their responsibilities. Respite care can take place within the home (domiciliary respite), or involve a stay in a care home (residential respite care). Funding for both is available from the Charities in certain cases.

Funding for Respite Care is also available from the local authorities in some cases. Applicants should ask to have a Carers' Assessment. Following this, the local authority may be able to offer practical or financial support.

Carers UK provides a wealth of information about the support which may be on offer from other organisations.

Convalescent Care

Convalescent care is relied upon when a person is recovering from a serious illness, injury, or surgery. Visit the NHS Choices website for more about procedures for care following discharge from hospital. The Charities do not provide funding for convalescent care.

Holidays for older people

A limited number of two-week holidays in the UK are available to recipients of a Masonic Relief Grant, or to individuals sponsored by their province. Almoners should encourage any eligible individuals to apply via Freemasonry Cares.

Mobility aids and essential home adaptations

Assistance is available from the Charities in certain cases. Contact Freemasonry Cares to discuss further.
