Mobility and home adaptations

Assistance can be available from the Charities to help applicants retain their independence, and continue living in their own homes. Applicants need to have had an Occupational Therapist assessment, or a letter from their GP confirming which aids or adaptations are necessary. If applicants are having to wait over eight weeks to have this assessment, they may well be eligible for a consultation and assessment grant. There are no forms to fill in or financial assessment required.

Mobility Aids

In the past, grants have provided a wide range of equipment, including mobility scooters, powered wheelchairs, rise-recliner chairs, car hoists and adaptations, specialist computer software and communication aids for both adults and children.

Home Adaptations

Grants for home adaptations can cover the costs of wet rooms, bathroom adaptations, entry ramps and ground floor adaptations. Applicants need to apply to their housing department for a Disabled Facilities Grant, to see if any support can be offered by the local authority.

Home improvement loans

In certain cases, the Victor Donaldson Fund can provide home improvement loans which are secured against the value of the home. These are normally for older people and are intendede to enhance the quality of their life by performing vital repairs or adaptations to their homes. Although these loans do attract minimal interest, successful applicants are not required to make repayments. Repayment is only made when the property is sold or changes hands.
